Evan Cloud and Evan Home, the Current Focus!
February 14, 2021
The two categories most of my side projects fall under these days
If I have already mentioned the phrase ‘Evan Cloud’ before in this blog, then I apologize because I swear I’m introducing it for the first time. But what is definitely new (surely) is the ‘Evan Home’ branding. What’s going on you may ask with the rather narcissistic naming schemes? Allow me to explain!
If you know me at all or know my blog, then you’ll know I love cloud computing. It’s my bread and butter, my day job and my moonlighting, it’s simply lovely. So a lot of what I do, I refer to as Evan Cloud, where it’s my take or my resources from cloud computing. Primarily, Evan Cloud focuses on Containers via Kubernetes and I aim to introduce layers of abstraction so that I don’t need to worry about the underlying provider. You will have seen in my previous post how I recently switched from AWS to DigitalOcean quite easily, since Kubernetes is my layer of abstraction. I hope to be able to introduce other layers of abstraction so that I can more easily shift providers as I need to.
The some what new thing that I’ve been doing is what is lovingly called Evan Home! It’s not related to home design, although I am also remodeling my room. Rather, it’s around a home lab! Some friends introduced me to the concept and also seeing the online communities around home labs have been super interesting to follow too. It’s not just been about getting large racks at home, rather I do have several goals with my future lab. This includes but not limited to - learning, obviously. Reducing my cloud computing bill by shifting to home based workloads and finally ensuring I have greater control over my personal data. The last point, has already started. I will be sharing some posts soon on my journey towards my own storage server at home that I have been enjoying so so much. I also believe that in terms of what I pay for per month on cloud VMs, I could get a lot more with physical hardware, where the monthly power consumption would be cheaper than said cloud VMs.
We’ll see what happens anyway! Like I alluded to, progress has already been made! Storage is good to go, I’ve some basic Compute I use for development and I’m working towards my Networking. I’m quite looking forward to sharing my progress on this journey on my blog. I hope that you are too!
Thank you!

I've no real claim to fame when it comes to good photos, so it's why the header photo for this post was shot by Taylor Vick . You can find some more photos from them on Unsplash. Unsplash is a great place to source photos for your website, presentation and more! But it wouldn't be anything without the photographers who put in the work.
