Fans Go Brr

We don’t like noise

This will probably be a short one, written while I wait for a hair cut. To help enable my new self hosting efforts I looked to re image my Rapsberry Pis. I needed to upgrade the SD cards in some of them, to 64GB and a thing on my to do list is to introduce some file shares. As part of the upgrade I decided to move towards Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS.

I have powered my Pis with PoE hats for a few months with no issue. But, once I changed them to 22.04, my ears detected something. The fans on the PoE hats, begun to make themselves known. My word, the noise was unbearable. Even with some active noise cancellation headphones, I could still hear the noise. One night when I was going to bed and I could hear them through my wall, I thought enough was enough and just plugged them out.

If you have not consumed his content yet, I highly recommend Jeff Geerling as his blog post on the hat fans proved to be my saviour. I think the only thing different I had to do was use a different file name, described in the comments. But once I did that, the fans fell into line and I am back to the far more tolerable hum of the room with my UniFi gear, among other things.

Thank you!

You could of consumed content on any website, but you went ahead and consumed my content, so I'm very grateful! If you liked this, then you might like this other piece of content I worked on.

Why the reimaging was important

Photographer

I've no real claim to fame when it comes to good photos, so it's why the header photo for this post was shot by Bryan Goff . You can find some more photos from them on Unsplash. Unsplash is a great place to source photos for your website, presentation and more! But it wouldn't be anything without the photographers who put in the work.

Support what I do

I write for the love and passion I have for technology. Just reading and sharing my articles is more than enough. But if you want to offer more direct support, then you can support the running costs of my website by donating via Stripe. Only do so if you feel I have truly delivered value, but as I said, your readership is more than enough already. Thank you :)
