Good Vibes

When you have just been vibing
So to share some news that’s getting older with every passing day, recently I departed from my role as an Associate Platform Engineer with McKesson. It was a decision that was several months in the making, but once I had the ball rolling, there was no stopping it. I had found that I began to lose the enjoyment in my work and when your work closely relates to what’s effectively a hobby, that impacts one’s ability to enjoy said hobby. I had lost quite a lot of my interest and passion for cloud, self hosting, among other things. The work just became work and I knew that was no longer sustainable. So I decided to leave, it was really tough given what was effectively three years of my life in varying capacities with one company, the place had really grown on me. I guess too, it was my first time ever changing jobs which probably did not help.
I think your ‘vibe’ is important. We all know it, it’s this sort of energy and feeling that we all radiate even if we don’t notice it. You meet someone and you may instantly hit it off, realizing that they have great vibes. Or, you see someone on the train one day and think that maybe you should not sit next to them. I know for me, losing my vibe is generally a sign of things overall not going that well for me mentally. Not that I always need to radiate sunshine, but generally I feel that when I’m in that good place, I just get into one of these really nice flows where I just roll with the punches and enjoy what I do. The bad vibes that I had coalesced into over time, I sought to slowly resolve through complete ignorance of cloud computing and everything else related. I went on a detox so to speak for around a month. I can say this has been one of the single best decisions I’ve made in a long time, to completely reset from things and get as close to a clean slate as possible. Over time, the vibes started to tip back on the scales, from bad, to neutral and now, to good.
I recently started my new job as a DevOps engineer for C.H Robinson. It’s only been two weeks, but the good vibes are real. I just feel myself ramping up over time as I get used to the new role and I feel the passion coming back into cloud and self hosting. The week I took the train to and from work, listening to the excellent Self Hosting podcast by the folks over at Jupiter Broadcasting. Listening to that I feel like I’ve found long lost friends who have the same passions as me. What we’re doing in work so far is also super exciting and I want to get up to speed as soon as I can so I can start contributing back to our efforts. Along with all that, just this morning I launched I guess a “meta” side project, which is a status page https://status.evanwebservices.com that gives a high level overview of my services. Not to mention just good chats and good fun with those I love around me.
If there’s one thing I can recommend to all in life, is to check your vibe. Not everyday needs to be perfect, but once you know you’re vibing, you’re in a good place.

Reviewing My 2020Photographer
I've no real claim to fame when it comes to good photos, so it's why the header photo for this post was shot by Austin Chan . You can find some more photos from them on Unsplash. Unsplash is a great place to source photos for your website, presentation and more! But it wouldn't be anything without the photographers who put in the work.
